Dereham Neatherd High School - Remote Education

Remote Education Work during pupil absence or school closure Pupils should complete work from their core knowledge books (Yrs 7-9) or from their revision guides (Yrs 10 & 11) for the first two days of their absence. From the third day, their teachers will communicate with them via NSix with directions on what work to do, such as particular pages in a work booklet, sections of a Google Classroom or work attached to an email. In the event of a wider school closure due to Covid-19 restrictions or any other unavoidable event, our remote education contingency plan and policy is on the school website page below. https://ift.tt/2UdS5lq

As the weather turns chillier, it is more important than ever that students are dressed appropriately for the weather conditions. A plain, light coloured t shirt or vest can be worn under the school shirt for an extra layer of warmth. A jumper is also recommended and should be worn under (and not instead of) the school blazer. To help families to quickly source a suitable jumper we are relaxing the uniform policy to include any plain navy v-necked jumper (the Neatherd logo is not compulsory). For PE, plain navy tracksuit bottoms are a much warmer option than shorts or a skort and, on top, students can wear the PE polo shirt, the school rugby shirt and a plain navy sweatshirt. Should they wish to, students can also wear skins/base layers under their PE kit to provide an additional layer of warmth. Finally, please ensure your child has a suitable, warm and waterproof coat for school. If students arrive at school wet, it is very difficult for them to get warm and dry. A plastic bag can be used inside the school bag to keep the contents dry in heavy rain. As always, if you have any questions regarding uniform or need any support to ensure your child has all the uniform they need, please contact us.

In line with homework starting next week, the Gateway homework club WILL be open from next week for students to complete homework. Like everyone else, however, we will have to follow the social distancing rules and have year group bubbles in at a time. Each year group will have the opportunity to come to homework club once a week before school (from 8.20am), break time, lunch time and after school. For break and lunch sessions we will come to the year group community area and collect students wishing to come to homework club. For after school we will collect from the tennis courts and exits. For before school, please could the members of staff on the entrance gates send the students to the Gateway. Only designated year groups will be allowed to use the homework club – anyone else will be sent away.

Dear Year 11 pupils I hope that you are all well. I write to you at a very uncertain time regarding exams results across the country. A level grading brought exams in to the headlines last Thursday and they have remained there ever since due to constant changes to how they may be awarded and the appeal routes that pupils may or may not have open to them. I apologise for writing to you later in the day than planned however I have been waiting for the latest DfE/OFQUAL announcement to be released so I can provide the most up to date information. We have just received this announcement and it has been confirmed that pupils will be receiving their Centre Assessed Grades (CAGs) for each of their subjects. These are the grades we put forward to exam boards as our recommendations based on teachers’ knowledge of their pupils. Having considered advice and guidance from various sources, I have decided that we will issue results via email and not have the traditional results day collection in school on Thursday. You will instead receive your results by 10am on Thursday morning by email to your NSIX account. Please be reassured however that although not in school, we will have staff, including our careers advisor, available remotely to assist with any problems or queries on Thursday morning. If you have not received them by 10am then please email office@neatherd.org and someone will assist you. Accompanying your results will be the grades from any mock exams you completed in Year 11. There will also be clear information on how to access support and make appeals. I am aware of some sixth forms who have already written to pupils asking them for mock exam grades on school headed paper. Please don’t let these requests worry you. You will have all of the information you need on Thursday. We had previously informed you that you could collect your leavers hoodies and year books with your results on Thursday. Mrs Gormley will be available on Friday morning between 10am and 12pm to hand these out. Please visit the school between these hours to collect. If you are unable to collect on Friday then we will arrange another time for collection. In the meantime, please don’t let media stories scare, worry or mislead you. We will support you whatever happens. Mr Smith and all at Neatherd

Tuesday, 21 July 2020

This has been a school year like no other in living memory. We’re probably unanimous in wishing to see the back of 2019-20 and looking forward to the new academic year, when school opens to pupils (Y7 and Y11) on Monday 7th September, and all the others the next day. When the government announced the closure of schools on Wednesday 18th March, our attendance was already plummeting with pupils being kept home and being sent home with symptoms of the virus. A quarantined triage room was set up and we feared for the health of our school community. We also had to consider how to keep educating our pupils from the following Monday, with just two working days to prepare a remote education system. Our year 11 pupils were broken-hearted to hear, on the news like their teachers did, that they would not be able to sit the GCSE exams they had spent months, years, working towards. Their now-traditional end of year rituals – the farewell form party, the shirt signings, the exam speeches, the prom – were now all up in the air. Staff hastily put together a small farewell gathering for them on the Friday afternoon of March 20th, now their final day of high school. Other pupils missed out too – the year 10s on their week’s work experience, as well as our sports festival, activities week, trips out, school holidays to Belgium, Italy, Spain, France, all cancelled. The support staff went into fifth gear, organizing free school meal vouchers for families to be sent out immediately so no pupil missed out. There was no time to wait for the government to sort things. Welfare calls were made to all Neatherd families to check in on how they were managing. We ordered dozens of netbooks so pupils could continue their learning and distributed them within weeks. The government’s smaller batch of laptops arrived a few weeks ago and will also find their way to pupils. Teachers entered into a new way of working. Uploading work to the Google Classrooms (which they had to quickly learn how to use), organizing pupil work, giving feedback at all hours, responding to emails, teaching by text, video tutorials, Google Meet check ins and holding staff meetings online. Working from 6am to 6pm became the new norm, staring at the screens while their own families sought to find a new normal. Teachers are parents too and found that “home schooling” was far more difficult with our own children than teaching “bottom set year 9” on a Friday afternoon. The Google Classrooms will stay open throughout the summer so pupils can improve and complete any work they need to. The pupils really stepped up too – producing excellent work for months, finding technological solutions such as uploading work via smartphone, email conferencing and innovative ways of not just doing school work but learning new skills – DIY, childcare of siblings, new hobbies and of course cooking the family meals – and sharing these successes with us here on our Facebook page. #neatherdhomelearning shows these fantastic kids keeping spirits up in those dark (but sunny) months. Parents and carers suddenly became teaching assistants at home, and their eyes were opened not just to the intricacies of the school curriculum and the technological prowess of their children but also to the importance of what school provides above and beyond the teaching in the classrooms – the routine, the discipline, the pastoral care and the support for kids, earning a new respect for what happens behind the famous red doors. We thank the parents for working with us in maintaining the progress of the pupils – some thrived, some struggled – but all were supported and cared for. The school of course wasn’t closed at all. We welcomed in the children of key workers – NHS, police, agriculture, care, retail, education etc. – so their parents could keep the country’s essential work going. The building was kept clean and safe, with new social distancing measures by our great site team. Pupils who relied on our support were also brought in – peaking at 75 pupils on our busiest day. The school stayed open throughout Easter “holidays”, May half term, and the bank holidays. Staff worked on a rota, caring for the children and ensuring a safe routine for them during school hours. Pupils worked the allotment, sent cards to care homes and made PPE masks and shields for local health and care workers. Many of these kids have spent an unbroken four months of school together in unique circumstances that they will surely look back on with fondness for the rest of their lives. As with every end of year, there are tinges of sadness as we say farewell to some colleagues. Ms Rogers in the data team, tenaciously organizing the sensitive details of our pupils and families; Mr Minai, the softly spoken, sharply dressed mathematical genius who leaves us for Jane Austen School; Mrs Zawiasza, our tough cookie cover supervisor ably taking year 11 maths one lesson and year 8 art the next. And finally of course a stalwart of the Neatherd scene. We say a fond farewell to Mr Miller, head of PE and a teacher at Neatherd for 36 years. The word legend is often overused but not in this case. Everyone will miss his humour, warmth, support and sheer passion for sports, especially rugby. And now we are looking ahead to September, again given a very short period of time to plan “the best way we can” a safe return for pupils and staff. We are confident that our school, like all other schools working with like minds, will bounce back and continue to offer the education, care and kindness we are renowned for. We would love to share your messages with staff when we reopen, so we ask you to share them here: https://ift.tt/2OGy1W1 We wish all our families and friends a properly relaxing summer break – everyone deserves one – and we will see you all in September.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards Dear Participants and Parents, Whilst D of E expeditions have not happened so far this year, and whilst we are waiting to hear when we will be able to offer this section again, this is the ideal time to ensure that you have completed the other three sections to your award: Volunteering, Physical and Skills. The sections are also more flexible, and can be made up from different activities at this time. Please do look at the D of E website for up to date information and changes that are agreed to help you to complete your award. You can now help neighbours, and family, and skills can relate to how you have had to learn about the “new normal” during the Covid 19 pandemic. For this current situation, D of E is offering an award for the completion at Bronze of the three sections that can be completed – the expedition can always be added at a later date. We will be launching both Bronze and Silver to Year 9, 10 and 11 on our return to school – unfortunately, we will not be able to do an assembly as previously, but we will offer the award and completion of the current awards in 2020-2021. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me through email at office@neatherd.org (marking it for my attention) or vjones55rp@nsix.org.uk , or through eDofE if you have currently signed up. Badges and certificates for awards completed are currently being held at school, as we would like to be able to have some form of celebration to recognise the achievements. Obviously, we need to make sure that we adhere to any current guidelines and safety concerns. Good luck and enjoy finishing the sections that you can!! Mrs Jones

The Lockdown Diaries - Fly Festival 2019

We had lots of trips to universities organised for the summer term for our "more able" pupils in years 9 and 10 - however they've obviously been postponed. However our friends at the UEA outreach office are still doing work. One of which is this: The Lockdown Diaries – Creative Writing project (age 11-16) The Lockdown Diaries was launched this week by UEA’s Festival of Literature for Young People. The project invites budding writers to reflect upon their experiences of the nationwide lockdown and share their highlights, insights and struggles through creative writing. The project will offer a series of activities, competitions and digital content for students to engage with over the coming weeks. Students who submit their writing stand the chance of winning a prize as well as having their writing published in The Lockdown Diaries anthology; a local collection of work which will be illustrated, printed and distributed to Outreach partner schools in the autumn term. The Lockdown Diaries launched with an 8 Week Challenge series for students and their families to complete at home. The online challenge is comprised of a weekly short-form creative task which students are asked to complete in 50 words or less. The challenges will encourage students to write in unique formats, including a novel in a tweet, a three-word poem, or a cliff-hanger sentence. The first challenge was set by author and FLY Patron, Alexander Gordon Smith, challenging students to write an acrostic poem or acronym using the word LOCKDOWN. For further information, please visit the FLY website https://ift.tt/3bXugFc, or email FLY@uea.ac.uk if you have any questions. The final challenge will be posted on Monday 25 May 2020, after which a new activity will follow.

Dear parents/carers, Over the next few days, members of staff will be phoning home to see how pupils have been getting on so far during the school closure. We will try to answer any questions that you or they may have and can discuss if there is anything we can do as a school to give your children - or indeed your family more broadly - any additional support during this difficult time. Please note that many members of staff will be working from home and have been asked to block their number for safeguarding reasons, so your phone may display an 'unknown number / unknown caller' message when it rings. If we are unable to make contact, we will leave a message where possible and will try to call you at another time. Take care and stay safe. Best wishes, Mr Mallett (Deputy Head)

Request a swab kit to register as a potential blood stem cell donor

An urgent message from DKMS. "We are hugely concerned about the impact COVID-19 is having on those who are relying on a blood stem cell donor to save their lives. Cancer patients are having their treatment plans changed or delayed, often in ways that will have a detrimental impact on the likely success of those treatment. The same applies for blood cancer patients: while many stem cell transplants are still proceeding, the circumstances in which to organise them have become more difficult and more uncertain. There are also transplants that have been deferred or delayed. So we still need even more potential blood stem cell donors, and we know from our clinicians that once the world is free of COVID-19 there will be even more transplants needed. You or someone you know may be the lifesaver someone is looking for. In such difficult times, it’s crucial to pull together and support those that need it the most. By spreading the word, you offer hope to people with blood cancer and blood disorders as we face these uncertain and difficult times." Please share widely https://ift.tt/2yeYUvd

Thinkuknow - home

#NeatherdWellbeing - the first in a series from the indomitable Mr O'Brien. As you know, schools across the UK are now closed to most families. This is a difficult time for most parents. There is a really good new website available to provide you with support and resources to help you learn about online safety at home with your child. This is the website: https://ift.tt/1m4n0dF This website contains helpsheets and 15 minute activities you can do with your child and will be updated regularly. I often see a divide in meetings about online safety where parents want to know more about the online world and young people have all that knowledge but don't use it as wisely as they could. This could be an opportunity to learn together and create a more open culture in some homes about internet use. It's also something to timetable into the day. Please encourage your young people to read my regular safeguarding and wellbeing emails on nsix. Good health at this time, Nick O'Brien Assistant headteacher, Safeguarding Lead

I am sure you will have heard the announcement yesterday evening that schools in England will close on Friday. We found out this news at the same time as everyone else. We know that many of you will have questions about school being open next week and who this will be for. This is going to take a little organisation and we are waiting for a some more guidance from central government and the Local Authority. Nevertheless, we will be doing out utmost to make the situation work and support the key workers and families that need us most I am told we will receive more guidance today. Once we are clear about what this is and we have a clear plan in place, we will be in touch. Please keep a close eye out for email communications from the school. Chris Smith Headteacher
