Year 11 Neatherd pupils support teachers in their charity bike ride Two teachers from Neatherd High School are planning a Charity Bike Ride in aid of BREAK, the school’s chosen charity for the year. The trip is going to take place during the school’s Curriculum Enhancement Week and is going to take them from Dereham to London and back. Head of Computer Science and Timetabler Adam Gibson and ICT teacher Mike Lyons are going to set off at the end of the school day on Thursday, 23rd June and will return at the same time the next day. “I anticipate that we will have to do 18 hours of cycling to complete the 250 miles round trip”, says Adam Gibson. The trip will lead the two teachers through Bury St Edmunds and Chelmsford before they reach Trafalgar Square which will be their destination before returning back to Norfolk. “We thought it would be good to do some more activities to support BREAK,” says Adam Gibson, “and as we love cycling it was an obvious choice.” The cyclist enthusiast who bikes to school several times a week from Norwich also runs a cycling club at Dereham Sixth Form College. “It is good for our pupils to see that you can do things to support charities”, says Gibson. Apart from the Bike Ride the teachers are planning additional activities like a 5-a-side football tournament and an “Auction of promises” to support the charity further. Neatherd’s pupils already raced round to support their two teachers in their aim to reach a £2000 target by organising a Football Charity match between two Yr11 teams. “There is nothing better than raising money for a good cause through the beautiful game of football”, says Harry Cottenden, who came up with the idea of the charity match and the two teams managed to raise £50 to support their teachers’ good cause. The match ended 2:1 for the “Coupland 11”, the “Cottenden 11” managed to go in the lead through a goal from Troy Spillett, assisted by Conor Manly who sprinted down the whole length of the pitch. The “Coupland 11” managed the equaliser through a goal from Will Taber and Chris Broster secured the win for the team. “Ben Jarrett in goal for Cottenden 11 was outstanding, without him we would have lost much higher”, says Harry Cottenden. If you would like to support the teachers, you can make donations via a Just Giving website, http://ift.tt/1Oz85o9 - or by texting DNHS99 followed by an amount - £XX – to 70070.
