Neatherd STEM Lego Report Neatherd High School hosted the East of England Lego League Championship on Sunday 29th January, 2017 6 Teams from around the county and beyond came to compete at the Lego League Championship. We had a fantastic event, 12 judges from a range of different Engineering and Science backgrounds helped ensure the event was fair and in line with the Lego League Rules. Lunch was provided by Frances who not only cooked lunch but of course an awesome pudding for all in attendance. Tasha Nicholson (Chair of Friends) provided the team with branded T-Shirts, which helped hugely in the core values element, and really demonstrated a ‘team’ unity for Neatherd. The Lego cake she baked also helped! Neatherd Won! Team NeXT : Aaron Nicholson, Lili-Mae Nicholson, Sergio Mendes, Olaf Don, Edward Curl and Billy Hall. They were awarded First Place in three of the four elements and second in the fourth. Judges were exceptionally complimentary about the team's resilience, independence and autonomy. They were ‘solution focused’ and often found fixes for the robot swiftly. We are now moving onto the National Final at Bristol University on 26th February. Thank you to a huge amount of support from different local companies. Birds of Dereham provided the judges and support staff with branded polo shirts (free of charge!). Starlings Toy Shop, in Dereham, provided us with a huge amount of freebies to award pupils efforts, and a great deal of display stands to really make the event exciting. Mr Chapman
Congratulations to Jack White and Memphis Symonds who finished first in their respective races as 18 Neatherd runners competed brilliantly in the Norfolk Schools Cross-Country Trials. Onwards to the Showground!

First Outing Badminton Success for Neatherd Friday 27th January saw Neatherd’s first outing to the National Schools Badminton Tournament. Both the KS3 boys and girls entered teams and each played against three other schools in matches consisting of both singles and doubles. The boys team of Matt, George, Josh, Miguel and Ashton played valiantly but were unable to overcome the stronger teams. However all other teams were predominantly made up of year nine players whereas Neatherd's were predominantly y7 and y8. All represented Neatherd to the highest standard and there is huge promise for future years as our young team strengthens and grows. The girls however, took the competition by storm, winning all of their matches. The team of Jasmine, Evie, Katherine, Jess and Abbey only dropped two games out of 15. For a first outing at competitive level, this is a true excellent result and their reward will be a trip to the regional finals. All players played with great sportsmanship and represented Neatherd to the highest standard. I am very proud of them all. Faye LeBon (coach)

Huge thank you to all of the providers who came to see our KS4 students about apprenticeships. Over 400 students were given information about alternative post-16 routes, which will have broadened their horizons for a changing job market in the future. Thank you to Mrs Broughton for organising yet again.

Food For Life News: Today we restarted the adult community cooking session, which aims to get adults and pupils involved with cooking healthy and nutritious meals. We had five pupil premium students and three parents involved – all dads which was great to see. The meal of the day was a chickpea and coconut curry which the pupils really enjoyed creating and cooking. They were amazed at the reduction of spinach and thoroughly enjoyed picking out new and exotic spices to use (smoked paprika). Connor Webster and Emily Aldus braved a teaspoon of chilli powder which required a gallon of squash to ease the pain. I did warn them! All pupils involved got to take home their meal for tonight’s tea, as well as a goodie bag of ingredients to cook it again with a recipe card. If you see any of these students around school please give them a big congratulations. They were well behaved and eager for another event. 8eD have produced a fantastic set of monarch themed board games. They have been very imaginative and some have been very creative. I really liked how Ruby made hers look like a castle, Charlotte and Millie’s 3D board game and Mikyla’s work of art! Well done for you all for getting your homework in on time and to a very good standard. – from Miss Cross
