Mental Health Event on Tuesday 8th December, 6pm-7pm Dear Parents / Carers Raising awareness about Mental Health - Tuesday 8th December 6pm-7pm Statistically, three students in every class will experience a mental health problem. The vast majority of mental health concerns begin when people are of school age. Three quarters of young people with mental health problems still fear the reaction of their friends, teachers and parents. If we are to end discrimination and stigma, talking about our mental health should be as everyday and ordinary as talking about our physical health. That’s the simple message behind the Time to Change campaign that the school has been part of for over a year now. Over that period, Time to Change has run two training sessions for our staff and we have committed to organising whole school mental health awareness sessions for our students once a month. We have a fantastic counsellor in school and have worked with MAP, CAMHS and our School Nurse to support our students on many occasions. We know we still have to do more to support our young people. We would like now to take the conversation about mental health into the community and invite students, parents and staff to this important event at our school. It takes place on Tuesday, 8th December in the school canteen; it will start at 6pm and will last around an hour. There will be time afterwards to talk and link up with different agencies. The evening will include: o A presentation about what we are doing in school to raise mental health awareness and discussion around the excellent Time to Change Material. o Information and activities from the ABCD Project who work to inspire communities to be more caring and welcoming places. o We will hear from the Norfolk and Suffolk Mental Health Trust Youth Group, who have produced and excellent short film on the topic of mental health. o We are hoping to welcome professionals from CAMHS and MAP to talk about what they do and how they support people locally Light refreshments will be served. Please book your space(s) by emailing sd@neatherd.org Yours sincerely, Nick O'Brien Assistant Headteacher (Behaviour, Safety and Safeguarding)

Students take over Norfolk organisations for a day How would you like to be the boss of a big company for a day? Last Friday 225 students from 24 different Norfolk schools had the chance to do just that. 45 organisations all over Norfolk gave the young people the chance to “look behind the scenes” and gave them a hands-on experience. From Neatherd High School six students from Year 9 were selected to take part in this exciting project. Rebekah and Reid spent the day at Community Action in Dereham where they found out what difficulties different charities are facing and tried to come up with possible solutions. “It was a very good, fun day”, says Reid, “it really helped me to think about my future.” Emily was one of two students from the whole of Norfolk to be able to help in Norwich’s Millenium library for the day. “It was so interesting to see how such a large library functions and what happens to all the books”, says Emily. Jennifer, Louise and Oliver had the chance to get involved at Norfolk County Council, the girls were part of a large group of students who did some strategic planning in the morning and had a proper debate in the Court Room in the afternoon. Meanwhile, Oliver spent his day at the Archive Centre at the Council where he first had to look for old documents and parchments in the stronghold before he got involved in making some masks for an upcoming children’s event. “The Takeover Day is getting more popular every year”, says Chris Williams, Senior Consultation and Involvement Officer at County Council, who organised the event. “We’ve had more than double the number of applications from last year, so we’ve been working non-stop to find placements for every student.” “We really enjoyed being part of this day”, so the verdict of the Neatherd students, “we can only recommend for even more companies and students to take part in the project next year.”

Pupils from Dereham Neatherd High School get a buzz for reading Every Y7 student at Dereham Neatherd High School has received free books as part of Book Trust’s annual initiative to encourage reading for fun. The books were funded from the school’s own library fund. There was something to suit every taste as the students chose from a variety of 17 fiction, non-fiction and poetry titles. ‘Our students were delighted to receive their books, and there’s been lots of excited conversations about the titles they have chosen. Literacy is very important at Neatherd so we take every opportunity to encourage reading for pleasure”, says Lorraine Gill, Librarian at Neatherd.
