Note to parents. We will not be doing "Christmas Jumper Day" at Neatherd. We last did it in 2015 when it coincided with a non-uniform fund-raising day. This event, which is heavily promoted by supermarkets and other retailers (see also World Book Day), has only been going in the UK since 2012. There are valid concerns about the pressures it places on families to spend money on garments which will have little use, at a time of the year when we are facing the biggest pressures financially. Evidence has shown that national school attendance dips on this day due to the social pressures involved. Furthermore, the environmental costs of producing these items using plastics and other materials also needs considering. Our pupils do a lot of charity work throughout the year - we have three "Non Uniform Days", charity weeks, a Christmas Fayre, Comic Relief, Sport Relief and Children in Need, as well as the Christmas Hamper drive each year. We hope parents and friends will understand our position on this. Please feel free to donate what you can to Save The Children using the link, Facebook do not take a cut from this.

Key Stage 3 Homework information………As is now routine, the last day for pupils to hand homework before Christmas is at the end of the last full week before the holidays. Therefore the last day for checking by the form tutor will be Thursday 12th December (Year 9) or Friday 13th December (Years 7 & 8). Key Stage 3 pupils do not have homework to do over the holidays. The first date after Christmas for pupils to hand in homework will be Thursday 16th January (Year 9) or Friday 17th January (Years 7 & 8). Dereham Neatherd High School - Homework
Here at Neatherd we know that children who spend time on homework show higher levels of academic achievement, as homework enables children to reinforce, practice and apply the skills learnt in class, in order to build knowledge of the different subjects. Key Stage 3 students use their Core Knowledge Booklets to revise and build knowledge. Students record their learning (self-quizzing) in their red homework exercise books, completing each of their subjects once a week. Reading is now part of KS3 homework and will be monitored by the English department. Please use the attached document to fully understand KS3 homework. It sets out the expectations and gives information about the schedule, rewards, sanctions and new Above and Beyond tasks. KS3 Homework starts this Thursday (Year 9) or Friday (Years 7 & 8) and will be checked by form tutors for the first time a week later on Thursday 19th Sept (Year 9) or Friday 20th Sept (Years 7 & 8). With over 1200 pupils involved in over a choice of nearly 40 activities, our recent Sports Festival proved once again to be a busy and brilliant opportunity for pupils to get absorbed in all things sporty. Activities on offer included: Archery, badminton, basketball, boules, bowling, boxing, Brazilian Jujitsu, Boccia, capture the flag, cricket nets, cross-country, dodgeball, dance-cheerleading, darts, DESA football, dodgeball, goalball, golf, handball, hockey, karate, kickboxing, kuk sool, netball, rowing, silly races, softball, table tennis, taekwondo, tag archery, tag American football, tag rugby, tennis, ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, yoga, and zumba. As in the last few years, pupils chose three of the above that they would like to participate in. The rest of the day was spent participating in our competitive, traditional sports day where the track races take place. Pupils competed in 100m, 200m, 400, 800m, hurdles and 4 x 100 relay. All were out to win, all received points for their houses. Anyone not involved cheered on the competitors from their houses. As always the atmosphere this year was electric! As always taking centre stage, and eagerly anticipated was the staff relay! The field events were completed on an earlier date. Additional points were also gained for houses through our Performer of the Activity scoring system. After each session the Activity Leader ranked five people who they felt has performed to their best. These were then added to the race results. We’re often kept in suspense as to who are the overall winners as it takes time to tally the points. This year it was the turn of KETT House to raise the trophy. Congratulations to them. We would like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to all pupils and staff involved. It is an immense, full on day, and its success wouldn’t be possible without everyone working together. Special mentions must go to the following: Top Activity Performers: Henry Barnes-West – Year 8, Kett Hayden Cook – Year 10, Cavell Vanessa Heron – Year 7, Cavell Top Field Event Performers: Eleanor Ampleford – Year 10, Kett – Finished 1st in Shot Put and Javelin (Broke Record in Javelin) Jasmine Hudson – Year 10, Carter – Finished 1st in Discus, 2nd in Javelin (Broke Record but was then beaten by Eleanor by 2.14m) Charlotte Moore – Year 8, Kett – Finished 1st in Long Jump (Broke Record – 4.05m) Records Broken during Field Events: Charlotte Moore – Year 8, Kett – Long Jump 4.05m (previous 4.0m 1995) Eleanor Ampleford – Year 10, Kett – Javelin 27.57m (previous 22.49m 2015) Top Race Event Performers: Beth Barrett – Year 10, Carter – Finished 1st in both 100m and Hurdles Memphis Symonds – Year 9, Cavell – Finished 1st in 200m and 800m Amberly Wright – Year 10, Fry – Finished 1st in 400m and 2nd in 800m Points totals for Activities, Field and Races: Cavell – 749 Carter – 708 Fry – 643 Kett – 758

Your child may be able to get free school meals if you get any of the following: - Income Support - income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance - income-related Employment and Support Allowance - support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 - the guaranteed element of Pension Credit - Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to - Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190) - Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit - Universal Credit - if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get) http://bit.ly/31PaNlC

If you have not been given the message by your Primary School please ask your head teachers, or let me know and I can send it direct if you would like to take part. It was a great day last year and gave the pupils some challenging questions to sink their teeth in to! We’d love to see more teams taking part this year, we can even help with transport if this is what is holding you back. Entries by next week please!

Polite reminder from our librarian Mrs Gill: "We still have many overdue library books. Books are on loan from the school library with the understanding that they are to be returned or renewed within two weeks and students are responsible for keeping the book safe. Reminders are sent via the form tutor and also during library lessons and students are made aware of the consequences of not returning long outstanding books (over four weeks). Please encourage your child to look for and return/renew any overdue books. All Year 11 library books MUST be returned by May 24th 2019. If your child has a book outstanding of four weeks or more the replacement cost of a new book is £6.99 which will be added to your parent pay in due course, unless the book is returned in an acceptable condition. Many thanks for your support." :)

Anyone that did not receive their vaccination today, will have the opportunity to have it on Friday 14th June 2019, providing written parental consent has been given through the NHS portal. We would like to remind you about our Parents’ Forum which takes place on Monday, 25th March at 5pm, in room Society & Ethics 1. The agenda items are: • Proposed changes to reporting and assessment from September 2019 (Mr Mallett, Deputy Head) • Homework policy and practice (Mr Sinclair, Assistant Head) Please note that the Parents’ Forum is an opportunity for parents to contribute to discussions on how we move the school forwards and make it even better; it is not a ‘surgery’ and parents who have concerns or complaints relating to their own child should go through the usual channels, generally starting with a phone call to the class teacher, subject leader, form tutor or Head of House. We cannot deal with queries about individual pupils at this event as it is unlikely we will know enough about the detail to help and move things on. Parents are also invited to suggest possible items to the agenda. We would be delighted to welcome many parents to the Forum, if you would like to attend please e-mail office@neatherd.org

Duke of Edinburgh Award: Mrs Jones wants to remind all students that have signed up for the D of E Award scheme, that the training sessions start next Wednesday 9th January 2019. They have a choice of which session to attend- either lunchtime in En7 or from 3.45pm to 4.45pm in En7. It is expected that they attend one of the meetings each week. Bronze practice Expedition weekend is Friday 3rd May 7pm until 4pm Sunday 5th May.
