These students went to RAF Marham as part of the work they have been doing with Simon Taylor, with the Jon Egging Trust. Following the team building exercise in the morning, we had a tour of the base, and learnt particularly about the Tornado air craft. Mrs Jacobs

Breckland Elections on Twitter

With ex-Neatherd head boy Ed Colman's success for the Conservatives in the Council Elections last month, we thought we should share the efforts of another ex-Neatherd student, Hannah Lester, who was the Green Party candidate in the Mid-Norfolk constituency last week in the General Election. Society & Ethics education at Neatherd is inspiring! https://twitter.com/BreckElections/status/872994771991764992

We were delighted to host the RAF Roadshow again this year, as part of Neatherd's STEM drive. Mr Chapman's guests enthralled the students with their "Fun with Flight" theme - including a demo of a drone and small jet engine. The talk explained the Four Forces of Flight, and apprenticeship opportunities in the RAF are not just for careers as pilots!

Child Road Safety - King of the road

Important message to parents and carers. Please talk to your children about walking to school safely. We have read reports of Dereham pupils not taking care when crossing the roads, misunderstanding pedestrian crossing lights and worryingly, pushing and shoving each other near moving traffic. We will revisit the message in school, please remind our children of the dangers on the roads! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAgxZ-l5pY8

Turnout is high for the first session of the Neatherd General Election. Queuing down the Society & Ethics corridor to the official Polling Station, electors are checked on the electoral register and given a ballot paper. They mark their X next to their choice of candidate in a secret booth, then place their folded ballot paper in the box for the count later today. Years 7 and 8 also had an election special assembly where they learnt about how the British voting system works.

Mr Cannon explained what a general election is to the students, and how they can vote. Tomorrow our official Polling Stations are open at break and lunch in Society & Ethics rooms 1 and 2. Results will be announced after the count in the afternoon. #ge2017 #democracy

Neatherd High School students get the chance to vote in their own “General election” Neatherd High School has had a really exciting two weeks with students engaging with politics and deciding to run their own general election. Interest has been high, particularly from those who already attend the school’s debate club. Party leaders have been working hard with their advisors to prepare for a hustings on Tuesday and Wednesday during assembly time, where they attempted to win voters for the election on Thursday 8th June. The school have representatives from the Labour party, the Conservative party, the Liberal Democrats and the Green party. There will be some “real life” polling stations at the Neatherd election on Thursday, manned by staff, so all pupils can cast their votes. Party members have been campaigning during break and lunch times for the past two weeks, handing out leaflets and talking to potential voters - and there is hope for a large turnout on election day! “The dedication towards this election from students has been inspiring. Such interest in politics in these young people gives us hope for the future”, says Joseph Cannon, Head of Society & Ethics department and organiser of the hustings. “It was interesting to see that it was mainly girls who were interested in taking part in the election debates.” “I think it is important that you start being interested in Politics from a young age as it is all about the future of our country,” says Robyn Moore, aged 13, “and people need to understand what politics are about.” “Politics are a crucial part of our lives,” says Holly Gibson who was representing the Labour Party, “if you know about politics now you won’t fall into wormholes in the future when you are able to vote.” She enjoyed showing her “powerful side” and liked to demonstrated that women can do politics as well as men.
