May has kept us busy with two qualifying athletic events. The first, the Mid-Norfolk Athletics Championship was held at UEA on Wednesday 15th May. Winners who meet age criteria are to go onto the Norfolk Championships on the 10th of June. A cool and what had been wet morning soon turned into a cool but dry afternoon, and what an afternoon we had! Up against competition from Litcham, Northgate, Sacred Heart, Iceni and Wayland our 59 competitors excitedly showed us what they are made of. There were some outstanding results, but as importantly the way that everyone encouraged their team mates and how pupils were asking to ‘have a go’ on the very few events that we had not filled made it for me. All competitors should be incredibly proud of their achievements particularly when you bear in mind that at this point in the term the weather had been against us and had made practice time a very rare occasion! Yr 7 Girls: Alissia Watson- 200m 1st, Georgina Whitehead -100m 1st , High Jump 3rd, Long Jump 1st. Memphis Symonds – 800m 1st , 1500m 1st. Ruby Needs with the aforementioned girls won their Relay. Ruby Wilson – Shot 2nd. Yr 7 Boys: Ryan Ferrari – Shot 2nd, Lucas Rose – Javelin 2nd, Cailean Fennah - Long jump 3rd, Owen Brown – 200m 1st. Cameron Hodgson -100m 1st. Callum Scott 800m 1st. The relay team also won their Relay. Yr 8 Girls: Ruby Chantry- High Jump 1st, Long Jump 1st. Ellie Ampleford- Shot 1st, Javelin 2nd. Beth Barrett - 100m 1st, 200m 1st. Amberly Wright - 800m 2nd. Hallie Taylor- 1500m 2nd. Lucy Gedge and Milly Ogden made up the winning Relay team with Hallie and Beth. Yr 8 Boys: Kayhan Tokbay-800m 2nd, Zak Collins- Idi- 100m, Long jump 1st. Gwilym Hughes – Discus 2nd, Javelin 3rd. Gabriel Borges - High Jump 1st. Matt Way – Shot 1st. Relay team 1st. Yr 9 Girls: Tash Ward- 100m 2nd, Long Jump 2nd. Marni Taylor- 200m 3rd. Sophie Green-300m 2nd. Pearl Williams Eley- 800m 3rd. Lily Tarsey -1500m 3rd. Morgan Dorrell – Shot 1st, Discus 1st. Trin Donachie -Javelin 1st. Relay team photo finish 3rd, it was that close! Yr 9 Boys: Sam Swales – 800m 2nd. Brad Bowie 100m 3rd. Jake Meltom-300m 1st. Kane Clark -High Jump 3rd. Charlie Price-Shot 3rd. Relay team 2nd. Yr 10 Girls: Issy Green - 200m 2nd. Ellie Foster – 800m 1st, 1500m 1st. Eli Plomer – High Jump 3rd. Chloe Webb- Discus 1st. Relay team 3rd. Yr 10 Boys: Joe Kealey – Javelin 2nd. Kallum Brown – Long Jump 2nd , 800m 3rd. Charlie Dickerson- 1500m 1st, High Jump 2nd. Aaron Duffield – Triple Jump 3rd. Joe Kealey – 400 3rd. Adam Taylor – 100 3rd. Relay team 2nd. If you have not been mentioned above it doesn’t mean your efforts were not recognised Team Neatherd. Without all of you we would not have been the overall winners of the competition. Hoorah! Huge congratulations and well done! The following week off we went to the UEA again for the West Norwich and Dereham Schools Sports Partnership Competition. This one was a little more tricky! Our 60 competitors were up against some very tough competition as pupils from Northgate, Hellesdon, Taverham, Reepham, and Ormiston took to the track and field, also giving it their all. I’m not sure what they feed them on in these near Norwich schools, but it makes their legs work very, very fast!! Again we had some outstanding results and again each and every one of our competitors should be very proud of themselves. It was a tough one in such hot weather! Alissia Watson- 200m heat 1st, 200m Final 2nd. Georgina Whitehead -100m heat 2nd, 100m final 2nd. High jump 3rd. Long Jump 1st. Memphis Symonds 1500m 1st. Tamica Larbie-Shot 2nd. Cake, Clothes and Crafts Fashion Event at Neatherd High School Thursday 15th June 7-9pm Every year textiles students at Neatherd High school host a fashion show to showcase their work. This year we are changing the format of the show so that we can include teenage and adult fashion that is available in the Dereham area as well as students’ own work. We are delighted to announce that a number of local fashion-focused and textile craft businesses have agreed to take part in this year’s show. Knitwits, Chattels, M&Co., Emma’s Boutique and Morrison’s Nutmeg range will be participating. Each fashion business will host a section of the catwalk show devoted to their stock using Neatherd staff and students as models. The event will also include trade exhibition stands that will showcase the work of local textile artists and offer high quality materials and products for display and sale. The Friends of Neatherd High School will be providing refreshments so that delicious cakes will complete the unbeatable combination of Cs: clothes, crafts and cake. There will be no admission charge for the event and all ages and genders will be catered for and represented in our clothing ranges. The Friends Association has also planned fashion-related creative challenges and a raffle to ensure that the evening will be fun-filled and eventful. Some of the fashion outlets will also be offering discounts for their stores for people who attend the show. We anticipate staff and students will be modelling on the catwalk but if there are any parents, grandparents, brothers or sisters out there who fancy themselves as the next Cara Delavigne Don Lee, please feel free to offer your services by contacting The Friends of Neatherd High School or Mrs Sanderson.

Instagram 'worst for young mental health' - BBC News

There was an interesting article in the news today about social media and how apps can be bad for young people’s mental health. The “worst” app for mental health was Instagram, closely followed by Snapchat, then Facebook, then Twitter then YouTube. At Neatherd, we work hard in both lessons and tutor time, to instil internet safety and proper usage of social media, but this can also be a talking point at home. Have a look at this article from the BBC for further information http://ift.tt/2rwHCSl

It's GCSE Biology this afternoon, and all the year 11s are sitting in the exam hall and rooms working on their paper. Here is an example question for parents and friends: Q: Describe the difference between the function of a receptor and the function of an effector. In your answer you should give one example of a receptor and one example of an effector. (4 marks)

GCSEs: A revision guide for anxious parents - BBC News

GCSE Exam season is well under way, and this week sees the start of the hall-based paper exams. Ms Reardon and Mrs Daniels are pleased to report that our team of trained invigilators have seen all students really well-prepared, with black pens, transparent pencil cases, clear water bottles and so on. Here is a very useful article on the BBC site this morning about what parents can do to support their children at this time. http://ift.tt/2rkU32M
